Thamir Alkhafaji Exibition
Memories of Turquoise
Thamir Alkhafaji is famous for his striking ceramic murals. His colourful designs adorn gardens, living-rooms and palaces not just in his native Iraq but all over the Arab world. His style fuses Arabic letters with abstract forms in brilliant patterns. He is fascinated by glazes and has built up a formidable understanding of colour effects. He has a particular fondness for the colour turquoise which, he explains, has been used to ward off the evil eye since Babylonian times, for me, it is the colour of peace. Thamir moved to the United Kingdom in 2007. He now lives in West London For more than a year, Alkhafaji has been a resident artist at Artiquea Gallery, Fulham's vibrant treasure trove of traditional and modern art and artefacts from the Middle East. The Gallery displays works by contemporary artists alongside traditionally crafted furniture and objects on a regular basis. It also mounts special exhibitions. Its main goal is to serve as a cultural bridge between East and West. Alkhafaji was one of the artists who contributed to Artiquea first special exhibition which showed 47 artworks by Iraqi artists who still live and work in Iraq.
